Tokichi
Tokichi

March 31 (Bloomberg) -- The yen fell against the euro and the
dollar on speculation Japanese investors will send more money
overseas in search of higher returns in the fiscal year starting
tomorrow.

Financial companies in Japan are seeking to sell more than 330
billion yen ($3.3 billion) of mutual funds(共同基金) today
focused on global bond and stock markets, according to data
compiled by Bloomberg.

Japanese investors were net buyers of foreign securities for
four consecutive(连续的) weeks, according to data compiled by the
Ministry of Finance. Japan's benchmark interest rate of 0.5 percent
is the lowest among major economies.

``There's interest to sell yen for the mutual funds being
launched,'' said Tokichi Ito, deputy general manager of foreign
exchange in Tokyo at Trust & Custody Services Bank Ltd., a unit
of Japan's second-largest publicly traded lender. ``These orders
can pile up at the end of the fiscal year.'

The yen declined to 157.64 per euro at 10:41 a.m. in Tokyo from
156.79 late in New York on March 28. Against the dollar, it
weakened to 99.88 from 99.23. The dollar traded at $1.5780 per euro
from $1.5796. The yen may fall to 101 per dollar this week, Ito
said.

New Zealand's dollar tumbled after a private report showed
consumer confidence fell to a 17-year low this month. The New
Zealand dollar fell 0.6 percent to 79.24 U.S. cents. Australia's
dollar declined 0.3 percent to 91.50 U.S. cents.

Japanese investors were net buyers(净买家) of 185.6 billion yen
($1.9 billion) in overseas securities during the week ended March
22, according to figures based on reports from designated major
investors released by the Ministry of Finance in Tokyo.
