PART 1 ENGLIST WRITING
.
GENERAL NOTICES
. Write Clear, Concise and Direct Sentences
1.
Use the active voice
. At the heart of every good sentence is a
strong, precise verb; the converse is true as
well--at the core of most confusing,
awkward, or wordy sentences lies a weak
verb.
. Active voice:
Subject of sentence does the action.
. Passive voice:
Object receives the action.
. The candidate believes that Congress must place a
ceiling on the budget.
. It is believed by the candidate that a ceiling must be
placed on the budget by Congress.
. Researchers earlier showed that high stress can
cause heart attacks.
. It was earlier demonstrated that heart attacks can
be caused by high stress.
. The dog bit the man.
. The man was bitten by the dog.
Converting sentences to active
voice
. Look for a "by
" phrase (e.g., "by the dog" in the
last example above) If you find one, the
sentence may be in the passive voice. Rewrite
the sentence so that the subject buried in the
"by" clause is closer to the beginning of the
sentence.
. If the subject of the sentence is somewhat
anonymous, see if you can use a general term,
such as "researchers
," or "the study
," or
"experts in this field
."
. She closed the door and hurries away to
class.
. Can you tell Asia elephants from Africa
elephants?
. Helen is frightened with fear by the strange
sound coming from the next room.
. I am tired, I must go on working.
. The picture is about a poor little girl lived in
old China.

said and did.

their uniforms were green.

hard.

. George Boole, the son of a cobbler, was born in
Lincoln, England, in November 1815. Because of
his family's difficult financial situation, Boole had to
struggle to educate himself while supporting his
family.
. Nervertheless, he became one of the most
important mathematicians of the 1800s. Although
he considered a career as a clergyman, he decided
instead to go into teaching and soon afterword
opened a school of his own.
. In his preparation for teaching mathematics, Boole-
-unsatisfied with textbooks of his day--decided to
read the works of the great mathematicians. While
reading papers of the great French mathematician
Lagrange, Boole made discoveries in the calculus
of variations, the branch of analysis dealing with
finding curves and surfaces optimizing certain
parameters.
. In 1848 Boole published The Mathematical
Analysis of logic, the first of his contributions to
symbolic logic. In 1849 he was appointed professor
of mathematics at Queen's College in Cork, Ireland.
. In 1854 he published The Laws of Thought, his
most famous work. In this book he introduced what
is now called Boolean algebra in his honor. Boole
wrote textbooks on differential equations and
difference questions that were used in Great Britian
until the end of the nineteenth century.
. Boole married in1855; his wife was the niece of the
professor of Greek at Queen's College. In 1864
Boole died from pneumonia, which he contracted
as a result of keeping a lecture engagement even
though he was soaking wet from a rainstorm.[/size]

. At this stage, with limited "on-the-job" experience, it's
essential to distinguish yourself from others.and clearly
illustrate the skills and knowledge you offer. To
accomplish this, we use an Academic Skill Conversion.
that converts the skills and experience you've gained in
school and on the job into an impressive presentation.
. Additionally, our proprietary SkillNet. questionnaire will
draw out appropriate skills and experience in your
education, along with any transferable skills that may be
applicable from any past work experience. We will then
create, based upon your objectives, a distinguishing
document that enables you to stand out from your peers.
. Dear Ms. Roberts:
. Your advertisement for software engineers in the
January issue of the IEEE Spectrum caught my
attention. I was drawn to the ad by my strong
interest in both software design and Database.
. I have worked with a CALMA system in developing
VLSI circuits, and I also have substantial
experience in the design of interactive CAD
software. Because of this experience, I can make a
direct and immediate contribution to your
department. I have enclosed a copy of my resume,
which details my qualifications and suggests how I
might be of service to Database.
. I would like very much to meet with you to
discuss your open positions for software
engineers. If you wish to arrange an

Dear sir,
I left Xi乫an Jiaotong University as a graduate in electrical
engineering and got my B.S. in Aug 2003. Now I am an
assistant and experimenter, working in the Department of
Electrical Engineering of the Hunan Polytechnic University.
To pursue further studies I wish to enter the Graduate
University of Engineering of the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology to study for the degree of Master of Science. I
intend to enter in the fall of 2005. Your institute has a long
history and a fine tradition of scholarship. It is well staffed and
equipped, enjoying worldwide fame. To find a place in such
an ideal university of higher learning is indeed a matter of the
greatest honor. It is my long-cherished hope that I will be
fortunate enough to be admitted into it.
I should be grateful to know the conditions under which the
applicants are accepted. If possible, I also wish to obtain
graduate assistantship so that I may support myself and
obtain more practical experience. Would you please send me
an application form for admission and financial support? I am
looking forward to your early reply.
Respectfully yours,
Li Ping

Mr. Daddy-Long-Legs Smith
215 FERGUSSEN HALL
24th September
Dear Kind-Trustee-Who-Sends-Orphans-to-College,
. Here I am! I traveled yesterday for four hours in a train.
It's a funny sensation, isn't it? I never rode in one
before.
College is the biggest, most bewildering place--I get
lost whenever I leave my room. I will write you a
description later when I'm feeling less muddled; also I
will tell you about my lessons. Classes don't begin
until Monday morning, and this is Saturday night. But I
wanted to write a letter first just to get acquainted.
It seems queer to be writing letters to somebody you
don't know. It seems queer for me to be writing letters
at all--I've never written more than three or four in my
life, so please overlook it if these are not a model kind.
Before leaving yesterday morning, Mrs. Lippett and I
had a very serious talk. She told me how to behave all
the rest of my life, and especially how to behave
towards the kind gentleman who is doing so much for
me. I must take care to be Very Respectful.
. But how can one be very respectful to a person who
wishes to be called John Smith? Why couldn't you
have picked out a name with a little personality?
I might as well write letters to Dear Hitching-Post or Dear
Clothes-Prop.
I have been thinking about you a great deal this summer;
having somebody take an interest in me after all these years
makes me feel as though I had found a sort of family. It seems
as though I belonged to somebody now, and it's a very
comfortable sensation. I must say, however, that when I think
about you, my imagination has very little to work upon. There
are just three things that I know:
I. You are tall.
II. You are rich.
III. You hate girls.
. I suppose I might call you Dear Mr. Girl-Hater. Only
that's rather insulting to me. Or Dear Mr. Rich-Man,
but that's insulting to you, as though money were
the only important thing about you. Besides, being
rich is such a very external quality. Maybe you
won't stay rich all your life; lots of very clever men
get smashed up in Wall Street. But at least you will
stay tall all your life! So I've decided to call you
Dear Daddy-Long-Legs. I hope you won't mind.
It's just a private pet name we won't tell Mrs. Lippett.
The ten o'clock bell is going to ring in two minutes.
Our day is divided into sections by bells. We eat
and sleep and study by bells. It's very enlivening; I
feel like a fire horse all of the time.
There it goes! Lights out. Good night.
. Observe with what precision I obey rules--
due to my training in the John Grier Home.
. Yours most respectfully,
Jerusha Abbott

. I recently receive several reports about
paycheck deduction errors. We need to find out
what is causing the errors. Also I am concerned
about overtime in the payroll department. Amy
calico, payroll director, tells me that the payroll
system requires considerable manual effort and
that she needs more people to handle the work.
I thought our outside payroll service bureau, BIS,
helped us save money, not increase costs.
Please look into this.

. This is in reply to your systems request dated
September 17,2003
. Pick willians, systems analyst, will conduct a
preliminary investigation of the payroll system starting
on Monday, September 28.
. I would appreciate it if you would send a message to
SWL department heads to let them know that Rick will
be contacting them and people in their departments.
. I will keep you posted.

department to arrange for interviews or other
assistance. Please give him your full
cooperation. Thank you.

. What is your greatest weakness?
. Why do you want to work for us?

your company. I was most disappointed to note that on
examining the set of wine I ordered, four of them were badly
damaged.

essential that I receive these goods as soon as possible as
they are intended as a wedding gift for a relative.
. I have previously received a high standard of service from
your company and I trust that this matter may be brought to
a swift and satisfactory conclusion.
