• By focusing on its strengths, its key customers, and the
underlying values they need, American Management
Technology will increase sales to more than $9 million
in three years, while improving the gross margin on sales
and cash management and working capital.
• This business plan leads the way. In order to implement
these changes and improve profitability, we plan to
borrow another $100,000 long-term this year.
• AMT is built on the assumption that the
management of information technology for business
is like legal advice, accounting, graphic arts, and
other bodies of knowledge, in that it is not
inherently a do-it-yourself prospect. Smart business
people who aren't computer hobbyists need to find
quality vendors of reliable hardware, software,
service, and support. They need to use these quality
vendors as they use their other professional service
suppliers, as trusted allies. AMT seeks to fulfill
these needs and become the leader in business
information technology for its region.
• AMT provides both computer products and
services to make them useful to small
businesses. We are especially focused on
providing network systems and services to
small and medium business. The systems
include both PC-based LAN systems and
minicomputer server-based systems. Our
services include design and installation of
network systems, training, and support.
• AMT is a privately-held C corporation owned in
majority by its founder and president, Ralph
Jones. There are six part owners, including four
investors and two past employees. The firm
includes 21 employees, under the president
and four managers. Our main management
divisions are sales, marketing, service, and
administration. The service department handles
service requests, support, training, and
development. At present, we are weakest in the
area of technical capabilities to manage the
database marketing programs and upgraded
service and support, particularly with crossplatform
networks. We also need to find a
training manager.

• There are several different kinds of computer retailers
within the industry including:
• Computer dealers: often focused on a few main brands of
hardware, usually offering only a minimum of software, and
variable amounts of service and support. Their service and
support is not usually very good and their prices are usually
higher than the larger stores.
• Chain stores and computer superstores: usually offer decent
walk-in service, with very aggressive pricing, and little
support.
• Mail order: offer aggressive pricing of boxed product. For
the purely price-driven buyer, who buys boxes and expects
no service, these are very good options.
• We currently depend on newspaper advertising
as our main way to reach new buyers. As we
change strategies, however, we need to change
the way we promote ourselves. We will be
refocusing on our core message of service
through radio, cable TV, sales brochures, direct
mailers and newspapers. We need to sell the
company, not the product. We sell AMT, not
Apple, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, or Compaq, or
any of our software brand names.

THE IBM 360 ARCHITECTURE

• In mid-April 1964 IBM introduced the 360 family
of
computers.
• The beginning of modern computer architecture can
be dated from then.
• The profound intellectual innovation was the strict
separation of architecture from implementation
• The IBM, at that time, had about 6 or 7 separate and
incompatible product lines (this is in contrast to IBM's
line of punched card equipment which was one
consistent sequence of equipment):
• Some of the determining characteristics of these
"lines" were small vs. large computers, business vs.
scientific applications, history/technology,
organizational; e.g., Endicott vs. Poughkeepsie Labs
vs. San Jose Labs vs. World Trand (England); all
were independently designing computers.
• Lost economies of scale, particularly in
peripherals, research and development, ....
• Decided they would have one product line that
was upward and downward
compatible
(Upward compatible was common, you have a
program for one computer, then the next one up
would be designed to include all the instructions
and other capabilities of the original plus
"some"; you just wouldn't use the "plus some."
But going the other way was more difficult. How
could you run an application that was
programmed on a powerful computer with a rich
instruction set on a small computer with a small
set? It was not clear that this could be
accomplished.
• An idea of MV Wilke's (through IBM World
Trade) from the fifties provided the answer.
The solution was microprogramming

. The
idea was to build the architecture around
micro instructions. Then arbitrarily complicated
instructions (at the programmer level) could be
emulated by microprograms that were stored
non-volatilely in read only memories (ROM).

instructions not available in hardware could be
emulated in firmware.
• April 7, 1964 IBM announced the IBM 360 family:
Models 30, 40, 50, 60, 62, 70 spanning a performance
range of about 25 to 1.
• The new family was incompatible with all the previous
lines (although emulators were implemented for most
of them, again based on microprogramming)
• Ultimately, the family evolved into the IBM 370
(announced in 1970), IBM 303x (beginning in 1977),
IBM 43XX (beginning in 1979), and IBM 308X (starting
in 1981) all with 360 architecture and resulting in a
performance range of thousands to one. 309X, (3090-
400 over 2000 times faster than the System 360
Model 30.

demarcation between architecture and implementation,
multiprogramming, microcoded emulation.
Processor Products -- Final Report of
SPREAD Task Group, December 28, 1961
• This report recommends a new family of
compatible processors for the IBM product
line. A summary of the major points follows.
• 1. IBM customers' needs for general-
generalpurpose
processors can be most profitably

core-memory machine to the
machine for customers growing beyond the
7094 and 7030.
• There are processor needs above and below

A. Mission and Objectives
• 1. The SPREAD activity was initiated to
establish an overall IBM plan for data
processor products. The plan is to encompass
all stored- program processor developments in
IBM, is to extend to 1970, and must consider
the following factors.
• a. Solid logic technology (SLT), which
promises improved cost/performance and
reliability.
• b. New market demands for systems capable
of multiterminal, on-line, real-time,
multiprogramming operation.
• c. The explosive growth in applied programming
demanded by a larger number of dissimilar
systems.
• d. The 15- 20 engineering groups generating

establishment of consistency -- i.e., an IBM
"image" in the processor field.
• e. The need to resolve the interactions
between present and new processor products
across divisional and World Trade lines.
• 2. Faced with these present problems, the SPREAD
task force set as its objectives:
• a. The definition of a new line of processor products.
• b. The establishment of logical design, engineering,
and applied programming ground rules, within which a
processor product line consistent across divisions and
World Trade must be defined.
• c. The creation of a plan for the introduction of these

The Story of the Trojan Room
Coffee Pot
• Late 1991 A group of thirsty researchers including
Paul Jardetzky and Quentin Stafford-Fraser point a
camera at a coffee pot and write custom software to
allow the image to be displayed on all their screens.

Trojan Room coffee pot. It started back in the dark
days of 1991, when the World Wide Web was little
more than a glint in CERN's eye. I was working on
ATM networks in a part of the Computer Lab known as
the Trojan Room, (a name which, perhaps, causes
some amusement to American readers). There were
about fifteen of us involved in related research and,
being poor, impoverished academics, we only had one
coffee filter machine between us, which lived in the
corridor just outside the Trojan Room. However, being
highly dedicated and hard-working academics, we got
through a lot of coffee, and when a fresh pot was
brewed, it often didn't last long.

• Some members of the 'coffee club' lived in
other parts of the building and had to
navigate several flights of stairs to get to
the coffee pot; a trip which often proved
fruitless if the all-night hackers of the Trojan
Room had got there first. This disruption to
the progress of Computer Science research
obviously caused us some distress, and so
XCoffee was born.
• In the Trojan Room there were several racks of simple
computers used in the testing of our networks. One of
these had a video frame-grabber attached and was
not being used at the time. We fixed a camera to a
retort stand, pointed it at the coffee machine in the
corridor, and ran the wires under the floor to the
frame-grabber in the Trojan Room.
• Paul Jardetzky (now working in California) then wrote
a 'server' program, which ran on that machine and
captured images of the pot every few seconds at
various resolutions, and I wrote a 'client' program
which everybody could run, which connected to the
server and displayed an icon-sized image of the pot in
the corner of the screen. The image was only updated
about three times a minute, but that was fine because
the pot filled rather slowly, and it was only grey-scale,
which was also fine, because so was the coffee.
• This system only took us a day or so to construct but was rather
more useful than anything else I wrote while working on
networks. It also made a better topic of conversation at dinner
parties than ATM protocols.
• The first published record of XCoffee came when Bob Metcalfe
wrote about it in Comm Week on 27th January 1992 after
visiting the lab, and inspired by this success, there was talk of
other monitoring applications using low-frame-rate video.
Systems such as XSandwichVan and XPrinterOutputTray were
mooted, but the elderly frame grabber eventually gave up the
ghost, Paul and I moved on to other things, and the Trojan
Room coffee pot would have sunk into obscurity had not Daniel
Gordon and Martyn Johnson resurrected the system, treated it
to a new frame grabber, and made the images available on the
World Wide Web. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people
have looked at the coffee pot, making it undoubtedly the most
famous in the world.
• I don't think the coffee's any better, though.
The Back of the Envelope
• A Story
• It was in the middle of a fascinating conversation on software
engineering that Bob Martin asked me, ``How much water flows
out of the Mississippi River in a day?'' Because I had found his
comments up to that point deeply insightful, I politely stifled my
true response and said, ``Pardon me?'' When he asked again I
realized that I had no choice but to humor the poor fellow, who
had obviously cracked under the pressures of running a large
software shop.
• My response went something like this. I figured that near its
mouth the river was about a mile wide and maybe twenty feet
deep (or about one two-hundred-and-fiftieth of a mile). I
guessed that the rate of flow was five miles an hour, or a
hundred and twenty miles per day. Multiplying
1 mile x 1/250 mile x 120 miles/day ~ 1/2 mile3/day
showed that the river discharged about half a cubic mile of
water per day, to within an order of magnitude. But so what?
• At that point Martin picked up from his desk a proposal for the
communication system that his organization was building for
the Summer Olympic games, and went through a similar
sequence of calculations. He estimated one key parameter as
we spoke by measuring the time required to send himself a
one-character piece of mail. The rest of his numbers were
straight from the proposal and therefore quite precise. His
calculations were just as simple as those about the Mississippi
River and much more revealing. They showed that, under
generous assumptions, the proposed system could work only if
there were at least a hundred and twenty seconds in each
minute. He had sent the design back to the drawing board the
previous day. (The conversation took place about a year before
the event, and the final system was used during the Olympics
without a hitch.)
• That was Bob Martin's wonderful (if eccentric) way of
introducing the engineering technique of ``back-of-theenvelope''
calculations. The idea is standard fare in engineering
schools and is bread and butter for most practicing engineers.
Unfortunately, it is too often neglected in computing.
• Rules of Thumb. I first learned the ``Rule of 72'' in a
course on accounting. Assume that you invest a sum
of money for y years at an interest rate of r percent
per year. The financial version of the rule says that if
r times y = 72, then your money will roughly double.
The approximation is quite accurate: investing $1000
at 6 percent interest for 12 years gives $2,012, and
$1000 at 8 percent for 9 years gives $1,999.
• The Rule of 72 is handy for estimating the growth of
any exponential process. If a bacterial colony in a
dish grows at the rate of three percent per hour, then
it doubles in size every day. And doubling brings
programmers back to familiar rules of thumb:
because 210=1024, ten doublings is about a
thousand, twenty doublings is about a million, and
thirty doublings is about a billion.
• Suppose that an exponential program takes ten
seconds to solve a problem of size n=40, and
that increasing n by one increases the run time
by 12 percent (we probably learned this by
plotting its growth on a logarithmic scale).
• The Rule of 72 tells us that the run time doubles
when n increases by 6, or goes up by a factor
of about 1000 when n increases by 60.
• When n=100, the program should therefore
take about 10,000 seconds, or a few hours. But
what happens when n increases to 160, and the
time rises to 107 seconds? How much time is
that?
• Suppose that an exponential program takes ten
seconds to solve a problem of size n=40, and
that increasing n by one increases the run time
by 12 percent (we probably learned this by
plotting its growth on a logarithmic scale).
• The Rule of 72 tells us that the run time doubles
when n increases by 6, or goes up by a factor

• You might find it hard to memorize that there
are 3.155x107 seconds in a year. On the other
hand, it is hard to forget Tom Duff's handy rule
of thumb that, to within half a percent,
Pi seconds is a nanocentury.
Because the exponential program takes 107
seconds, we should be prepared to wait about
four months.
• Little's Law states that `The average number of things
in the system is the product of the average rate at
which things leave the system and the average time
each one spends in the system.' (And if there is a
gross `flow balance' of things entering and leaving, the
exit rate is also the entry rate.)
• if you're in line waiting to get into a popular nightspot,
you might figure out how long you'll have to wait by
standing there for a while and trying to estimate the
rate at which people are entering. With Little's Law,
though, you could reason, `This place holds about 60
people, and the average Joe will be in there about 3
hours, so we're entering at the rate of about 20 people
an hour. The line has 20 people in it, so that means
we'll wait about an hour. Let's go home and read
Programmer instead.' You get the picture.''
• Peter Denning succinctly phrases this rule
as ``The average number of objects in a
queue is the product of the entry rate and
the average holding time.'' He applies it to
his wine cellar: ``I have 150 cases of wine
in my basement and I consume (and
purchase) 25 cases per year. How long do
I hold each case? Little's Law tells me to
divide 150 cases by 25 cases/year, which
gives 6 years per case.''
Rabbit
• The rabbits have powerful reproduction ability.
One pair of adult rabbits can give birth to one
pair of kid rabbits every month. And after m
months, the kid rabbits can become adult
rabbits.
• As we all know, when m=2, the sequence of the
number of pairs if rabbits in each month is
called Fibonacci sequence. But when m<>2,
the problem seems not so simple. You job is to
calculate after d months, how many pairs of the
rabbits are there if there is exactly one pair of
adult rabbits initially. You may assume that
none of the rabbits dies in this period.
• Input : the input may have multiple test cases.
In each test case, there is one line having two
integers m(1<m<=10), d(1<=d<=100) , m is
the number of months after which kid rabbits
can become adult rabbits, and d is the number
of months after which you should calculate the
number of pairs of rabbits. The input will be
terminated by m=d=0.
