• To use Autorun to install applicable XenApp components on a Windows 2000 system, before you begin the installation, obtain the gdiplus.dll file from the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=6A63AB9C-DF12-4D41-933C-BE590FEAA05A&displaylang=en. Download and run gdiplus_dnld.exe on the local server and copy gdiplus.dll in the winnt\system32 folder. Then start Autorun.

• The following Citrix commands do not work correctly in XenApp 5.0 for Windows Server 2008:

• query citrix

• query farm

• query server

Instead, the following error message appears when you run these commands:

Invalid parameter(s)

The issue results from a design change in Windows Server 2008 and in Windows Vista SP1 that prevents the XenApp installer from modifying the values of some subkey entries of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\Utilities\query as necessary. To prevent this issue, Citrix recommends that you install Microsoft Hotfix 958652, available from http://support.microsoft.com, before installing XenApp 5.0.

• XenApp 5 for Windows Server 2008 supports both 32-bit and 64-bit editions of the Windows server in the same farm.

Solution:

Remove all previously installed versions of Java.

Install the Citrix Presentation Server Console again from the Citrix CD; this will install the required version of Java (v1.4.2_06)

Now you can install the latest version of Java again (in another folder than the old version of course; which is done by default). Normally they work together without any problems and the Citrix console will work perfectly.

When connecting XenServer to a switch, the following considerations should be considered.

Background

Switch ports must be configured differently for a XenServer host as opposed to a standard workstation. The following considerations are recommended when connecting a XenServer to a switch.

Considerations

Below are five things to change on switches for XenServer ports:

1. Enable PortFast on XenServer connected ports.

PortFast allows a switch port running Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) to go directly from blocking to forwarding mode; skipping learning and listening.

PortFast should only be enabled on ports connected to a single host.

Port cannot be a trunk port and port must be in access mode.

Ports used for storage should have PortFast enabled.

Note: It is important that you enable PortFast with caution, and only on ports that do not connect to multi-homed devices such as hubs or switches.

2. Disable Port Security on XenServer connected ports.

Port security prevents multiple MACs from being presented to the same port. In a virtual environment, you see multiple MACs presented from VMs to the same port causing your port to shutdown if you have Port Security enabled.

3. Disable Spanning Tree Protocol on XenServer connected ports.

Spanning Tree Protocol should be disabled if you are using Bonded or teamed NICs in a virtual environment. Because of the nature of Bonds and Nic teaming, Spanning Tree Protocol should be disabled to avoid failover delay issues when using bonding.

4. Disable BPDU guard on XenServer connected ports.

BPDU is a protection setting part of the STP that prevents you from attaching a network device to a switch port. When you attach a network device the port shuts down and has to be enabled by an administrator.

A PortFast port should never receive configuration BPDUs.

Note: When BPDUs are received by a PortFast port, this reception indicates another bridge is somehow connected to the port, and it means that there is a possibility of a bridging loop forming during the Listening and Learning phases. In a valid PortFast configuration, configuration BPDUs should never be received, so Cisco switches support a feature called PortFast BPDU Guard, which is a feature that shuts down a PortFast-enabled port in the event a BPDU is received. This feature ensures that a bridging loop cannot form, because the switch's shutting down the port removes the possibility for a loop forming.

5. Change port speed settings to Static if using a 10/100 switch.

Connecting to a 100 MBP/s port set the PIF speeds to 100 MBPs static with full duplex.

Note: It is not necessary to change speed or duplex settings when connecting to 1GB switches.
