The error message: "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client" is received during Backup Exec service startup or system reboot.

Exact Error Message
Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client.

Details:

When attempting to start the Backup Exec (tm) services, or during machine startup, the error is displayed (Figure 1).

Cause:

This error indicates that the default mail client has not been set, or is set to an application other than Microsoft Outlook especially in a scenario where there are two email clients present (presumably Outlook Express and Microsoft Outlook), and Outlook has not been set as a default.

Resolution:

There are two methods to resolve this error,Either set the Microsoft Outlook as a default mail client OR suppress first-time initializing Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI).

1. Set the Microsoft Outlook as a default mail client.

a. Start Internet Explorer

b. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options as shown in Figure 2 below:

c. Select the Programs tab as shown in Figure 3 below:

d. Set the default e-mail client to Microsoft Outlook and click OK as shown in Figure above.

e. Exit Internet Explorer

2. Suppress first-time initializing Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI).

If the system does not find Mapi32x.dll and Mapisvc.inf, it will display the message stored in the PreFirstRun value of the registry. This string allows applications to warn the user that they require the ability to initialize Messaging Application Program Interface (MAPI).

By modifying this registry key, the first-time initialization message residing in this key can be suppressed.
The error can be avoided by performing the following:

a. Open the Windows Registry Editor by entering Regedt32.exe via Start | Run
b. Browse to /HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Clients/Mail
c. Rename PreFirstRun (Figure 2)

Warning: Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.
