如何用低版本的VMware打开通过高版本VMware安装的虚拟机

Although we have some userlicenses for VMware workstation 6.0 at work, I still prefer the Server product,as it allows you to run VMs in the background as the local system account.  Additionally, the Server product can beconfigured to automatically startup/shutdown VMs based on the needs of thehost.  Either VMware Workstation does notsupport this feature or I am not looking in the right place.
I tried to open a VM thatI created with VMware workstation 6 with the latest stable VMware Serverversion, 1.0.7.  VMware server threw anerror that the “Configuration file wascreated by a VMware product with more features than this version”.
PHOOEY!
I was able to get aroundthis error by browsing on my host OS filesystem to the base directory for thisVM, then I updated the main VM config file (vmname.vmx) and the master VM diskconfig file (vmname.vmdk)
For theVM configuration file (.vmx), I changed the line:
virtualHW.version = “6″
to
virtualHW.version = “4″
For theVM master disk file (.vmdk), I changed the line:
ddb.virtualHWVersion = “6″
to
ddb.virtualHWVersion = “4″
Now VMware Server 1.0.7can run the VM!  Everything appears torun fine, and I have not seen any negative side effects.
