Have you ever used Flex and felt that the default Flex component skin was a little too utilitarian, lacking just a bit in the visual appeal and shiny disposition departments? Well, allow us to fix that problem for you. Two of our Flash and UI gurus, Joe Magnani and Jeff Bennett of the Media Innovation Group, have just developed a beautiful new skin for all of the default Flex components. The skin (which can be seen here) matches the look and style of UI components used throughout Yahoo! and balances the outward glossiness with some serious usability chops. Naturally, we are making it available to all of you under the very liberal BSD license — which does mean that you can use it, modify it, and distribute it to your heart’s content.
Check out Jeff’s intro to developing your own skins for Flex components, and then grab the Yahoo! Flex Skin and use it in a Flex app! And when you do, drop us a note — we love to hear from you!

Step 1. Download and Unzip the Source FileGrab the zip file here, and unpack it wherever convenient.
The following files are included in the distribution:
yflexskin.swf–all of the graphic resources necessary for the Yahoo! Flex skin.
yflexskin.ai–the Adobe Illustrator source file for the Yahoo! Flex skin –feel free to modify and re-export!
  misc.swf–the Yahoo! logo header.
yflexskin.css–the style sheet that maps the resources in yflexskin.swf to their respective styles.
DemoApp.mxml–a sample application containing all of the standard Flex components. This app won't run on its own since it has no< mx:Application> tag; instead, it'll be used as a component in another app that will embed the Yahoo! skin.
yflexskin.mxml–the main application file that will be used to launch DemoApp.mxml with the Yahoo! skin,
Step Two: Create a New Project in Flex
Start the Flex Builder. We'll create a new Flex project by choosing New >Flex Project:

Name the project 'SkinSample' and click Next:

Step Three: Import the Sample Application
Allow the project to remain in the default folder, and click Finish. You should now be presented with the default SkinSample.mxml file and a Flex Navigator on the left. We won't be using the default mxml file for the project, so you can close it. Instead, open the folder where you unzipped the files, select all of the swf, cssand mxmlfiles, and drag them into the srcfolder in the project tree in the navigator view.
  Step Four: Run it!
And now you're almost ready to go: right-click the yflexskin.mxml file, and select "Set as Default Application." Then run the project, and you'll see the Yahoo! Flex Skin sample application. That's it!
