DotNetNuke Forums Module Released

New forums module has enhanced user interface and many performance improvements<?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = O />

September 15, 2005 -- Perpetual Motion Interactive Systems Inc. today announced the official public release of the DotNetNuke® Forums module. The module is free and Open Source and adds to the already powerful collaboration capabilities of DotNetNuke.

“The DotNetNuke Forums module fulfils a basic requirement sought by community members,” said Shaun Walker, DotNetNuke creator and maintainer. “And because of the modules seamless integration with DotNetNuke, community members desiring a feature-rich and free forum application can quickly and easily add this capability to their DotNetNuke portals.”

Sponsored by AppTheory (http://www.apptheory.com) and TTT Company (http://www.tttcompany.com/), the latest release of the Forums module is compatible with DotNetNuke version 3.1.x.

“The Forums module version 3.10.04 not only exemplifies the potential of the DotNetNuke project model, but also sets high standards for others to achieve,” said AppTheory’s Chris Paterra, the co-leader of the Forums module project along with TTT’s Tam Tran Minh. “It was a process which took longer than we had anticipated, but using the module on a daily basis on www.dotnetnuke.com allowed us to make the module very robust.”

The blog feature which was included in the beta Forums module has been eliminated from the latest release and will be upgraded as a separate project. Data from the old blog feature will be preserved to provide a migration path to the new blog module, once the upgrades are complete.

The Forums module includes features such as,

o        Addition of date to the search indexing parameters

o        Replication of the core paging control for use in current and previous DotNetNuke releases

o        Pre-configuration of each new instance of the module with a default group and forum for immediate usability

o        Simplification of the moderation process through provisions for moderators to “trust” moderated users

o        Enhanced security throughout the module

o        Improved compatibility in Firefox and Safari

In addition, this release of the Forums module provides more configuration options to allow administrators to customize the module to suit their needs. Moderators are limited to editing, moving and deleting posts only for forums in which they have moderation access, giving administrators granular control in delegating moderation tasks. Better use of core caching also provides for increased performance and the ability to fully support web farms.

About DotNetNuke

DotNetNuke is a web application framework ideal for creating and deploying commercial web sites, corporate intranets and online publishing portals.  With a rapidly growing community of nearly 200,000 registered users and a legion of dedicated developers, DotNetNuke continues to strengthen its leadership position as a strong and versatile Open Source web application framework based on Microsoft ASP.Net technology. More information about DotNetNuke is available at http://www.dotnetnuke.com.

About Open Source

The basic idea behind Open Source is very simple: When programmers can read, redistribute, and modify the source code for a piece of software, the software evolves. People improve it, people adapt it, and people fix bugs. And this can happen at a speed that, if one is used to the slow pace of conventional software development, seems astonishing.
